Collision & Breakdown Information: 

What should you do in case of a collision or breakdown?

• For your own safety : put on your yellow safety vest;
• Try to get an overview of what happened;
• Mark the place of the collision or breakdown as such by putting up the warning triangle so that other drivers are warned;

Then: If there are wounded people:

• If possible, evacuate the victim from the dangerous area;
• Call help ( Phone number 112 for medical assistance, ambulance or firefighters, 113 for the Police);
• Perform first aid steps.

If there are no wounded people:

• Take pictures to document what happened;
• If possible, clear the road so that the damaged vehicles cannot cause further damage;
• Fill out an European Accident Statement with the other implied driver;
• Call a breakdown lorry.

Road Traffic Policing: 

Speed limits :

• Winter tires : In wintry weather conditions (clear ice, snow, melting snow or frost) cars have to be equipped with winter tires. More specifically, all wheels need to be equipped with winter tires. It is not allowed to mix winter and summer tires.
• Alcohol consumption and driving : For the average driver, blood alcohol contents should not exceed 0.25 mg/l. The maximum blood alcohol content for standard drivers is 0.5 g/l.
• Seatbelts and child restraint seats are mandatory. Helmets are mandatory for all two-/three-/four-wheeled cycles, except for bicycles. Please note that using a smartphone or other distractions while driving is strictly forbidden. Mobile phones can only be used in combination with hand-free sets.

Road Traffic Enforcement: 

Please note that law enforcement officers have the right to perform traffic controls (f.i. speed controls) at any given moment. During these traffic controls, they have the right to control your paperwork (personal and vehicle papers). Also, if there are signs indicating that a driver is under influence of alcohol, law enforcement officers have the right to perform preliminary breath alcohol tests.

Moreover, several permanent speed cameras are installed all over the country. Also, law enforcement officers have mobile speed cameras with which they can proceed to speed controls at any given time or place.
